For almost 30 years, Haydn benefited from the support of the Esterházy princes, who were generous patrons in the music world. The Schumann Quartet has also enjoyed the hospitality of Esterházy Palace, where the three brothers from Germany and their Estonian colleague spent a season in residency. The palace hosted the ensemble’s first performance of a piece by Swiss composer Helena Winkelman – a composition inspired by “Papa” Haydn’s sense of humour, who took as much pleasure in concealing a bird in a quartet as he did putting on imperial airs.
